THE MYSTERIOUS LEGEND

This tour takes you to one of the greatest Slovak tourist attractions lying at the border of the Little and White Carpathians, the small town of Cachtice. There is the most mysterious bloody legend woven round Cachtice castle and its 17th century countess Elizabeth Bathory… After leaving Bratislava it will take us only approximately 60 minutes to get to our starting point – the foot of the castle hill.

Tour Itinerary

SCENIC ASCENT TO THE CASTLE

Cachtice castle hill is a national nature reserve. About 20 minutes of rather steep ascending to its top provide wonderful views of the surrounding hills and valleys, the northernmost tip of the Danube Plain where the Little and White Carpathians meet. (There is an optional short easy walk to reach the castle, too). The fauna here is remarkably colorful; you can see a lizard basking on a stone, grasshoppers or praying mantis in the grass and various kinds of beautifully colored birds flying over your head.

NEWLY RECONSTRUCTED CACHTICE CASTLE RUIN

The originally only 64 meters long Early Gothic castle was built in the half of the 13th century as a frontier castle overseeing the important passage between the valleys of Myjava and Povazie regions. The importance of the castle was demonstrated shortly after it was built when, as one of the few castles in the Hungarian Monarchy, it withstood the onslaught of the troops of the Czech King Premysl Otakar II. Modern history of the castle is associated with the infamous story of “Bloody Countess” Elizabeth Bathory. (TICKET INCLUDED IN THE PRICE OF TOUR)

ELIZABETH BATHORY

The countess, a widow of Franz Nadasdy, inherited the castle in 1604. She allegedly, with the help of her servants, committed torture and gruesome murders of around 650 innocent girls. The murders took place at various estates in the Hungarian Monarchy, including Cachtice castle. Sentenced to death in 1611, Cachtice castle became her life imprisonment…

TOWN CATACOMBS

Cachtice catacombs are the pride of the locals. Initially used for storing fruit, wine, grain and food, they later became a shelter for people and their property in times of danger. Narrow openings connecting the corridors eased the defense against the pursuers – only one armed man could stop the whole troop of soldiers. Later on some of the corridors were enlarged and adjusted to transportation. Elizabeth Bathory reportedly used to ride her chariot along them, too; the rattle could be heard throughout the town. (TICKET INCLUDED IN THE PRICE OF TOUR)

CACHTICE EXPOSITION OF TRENCIN MUSEUM

Located right in the centre of Cachtice, the exposition also houses a section dedicated to Elizabeth Bathory. Come and see her clothes and paintings of her! One of the most valued original paintings had been stolen; therefore the town had its copy painted by Bohdan Jelinek in 1990. In 2013 the painting was borrowed by the organizers of European traveling exhibition on the world’s most bloodthirsty women; it was traveling around Europe for 9 months. But not only clothes and paintings, you will also see a fascinating collection of historical weapons, documents, jewelry and objects acquired in the archaeological research here! (TICKET INCLUDED IN THE PRICE OF TOUR)

TIME OFF IN CACHTICE, WINE / SPIRITS TASTING

Of course, you will have enough time to enjoy your lunch and stroll around the town centre on your own, to have an ice cream or a cup of coffee in one of the coffee shops located at the central square. And not to forget, there is a relaxing time reserved for you to sit back and taste a variety of delicious wines or spirits made by our local host during the tour, too (INCLUDED IN THE PRICE OF TOUR).

We will return to Bratislava between 6 and 8pm in plenty of time so you can enjoy your evening meal and drink in Bratislava city centre.

The ultimate tour of the north-west Slovakia!
